What Rock Should I Use for My Project?

Choosing the right material starts with how the ground will be used. For driveways and base layers, 3/4" minus or 1/2" minus compacts tightly and forms a stable surface. If drainage is the goal, 1" clean or 2" clean allows water to move through without pooling. Larger clean rock like 2" works well in areas with heavier runoff or erosion concerns. Smaller minus material helps with leveling and finishing passes. Picking the right size and type helps the surface hold up under traffic and weather.

What’s the Difference Between Minus and Clean Rock?

“Minus” rock like 3/4" minus and 1/2" minus includes fines that bind together when compacted. This makes it a strong choice for driveways, pads, and base layers that need to stay firm. Clean rock such as 1" clean and 2" clean has no fines, so it stays loose and promotes drainage. That makes it a better fit for backfill, drainage zones, and areas where water flow matters. The key difference comes down to compaction versus drainage. Using the wrong type can lead to shifting surfaces or standing water.

Where Should Each Material Be Used?

Fill dirt is used to build up low areas and bring sites to grade before adding a top layer. Topsoil is best for grass, landscaping, and any area where growth is expected. A dirt and screenings mixture can help with rough grading and compactable fill in certain conditions. Recycled aggregates and minus rock create solid foundations for roads and pads. Clean rock supports drainage behind walls or under structures. Each material has a role, and using them in the right order keeps projects moving without rework.

What Materials Can I Pick Up or Drop Off?

We supply 1" clean, 2" clean, 3/4" minus, 1/2" minus, dirt and screenings mixture, topsoil, and fill dirt for pickup. For drop-off, we accept clean fill like soil, concrete, and asphalt that is free of debris and contaminants. Loads are checked on arrival to keep material streams usable. Keeping materials separated helps speed up unloading and processing. If a load doesn’t meet requirements, it may be turned away. Calling ahead can help confirm what’s good to bring in.
